[04 May] Student Innovators Competition 2018

What do you do when you encounter a problem?
Complain about it? Or see a great opportunity?
If it's the second you can call yourself an innovator and join Student Innovators 2018 competition!

Student Innovators 2018” is a competition in which teams and individuals of aspiring students have the opportunity to present creative ideas and innovative solutions in a 5-minute “pitch” presentation to a panel of judges and the audience. Winners will receive prizes, which include, mentorship by Cyprus Business Angels Network (CYBAN) to the team of their choice, free training by GrantXpert Consulting Ltd, access to the C4E makerspace, and possibly monetary awards. Competition winners will also be eligible for 2 C4E scholarships to attend the European Innovation Academy’s summer school in Italy or Portugal.

“Student Innovators 2018” aims at:
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, risk-taking and entrepreneurship within the student community;

  • Encouraging students who wish to engage in entrepreneurial activities, to present their ideas and receive feedback and mentorship;

  • Establishing a public forum where students of various University courses in innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity can present the results of selected team projects of high quality.

  • Training a steady stream of young aspiring entrepreneurs, who are capable of taking their ideas to the market or the society as new businesses or social ventures.

  • Generating a wave of new, well-educated and well-resourced entrepreneurs in Cyprus, for the benefit of the local, regional and national economies.

TIMELINE:
  • Open Call for Applications: April 3rd

  • Deadline for applications submission: April 27th

  • Announcement of Final Ten results: April 27th

  • Competition: May 4th, Room 010, Social Activities Centre, University of Cyprus 10:00-13:00

The Competition:

Student Innovators 2018” is designed for early stage and empirical business ideas with a strong innovation potential and/or creative twist. The three best ideas will receive prizes that will include:

  • Mentoring from Cyprus Business Angels Network (CYBAN) to the team of their choice

  • Workshop (How to get further with your project) with GrantXpert Consulting Ltd

  • Scholarships for two students to attend the European Innovation’s Academy Summer program (EIA) in Italy or Portugal, offered by Centre for Entrepreneurship (C4E)

Entry Guidelines and Conditions of Participation:
  • The competition is open to teams (of max 5 participants) and individuals who are students at the University of Cyprus.

  • The proposals must be submitted via email to c4e@ucy.ac.cy by completing the application form below by April 27,2018.

  • At most 10 applications will be selected as finalists, and will be invited to pitch their idea in English, within 5 minutes, to a panel of judges and to the public, followed by 5 minute Q&A session.

  • For the presentation pitch you can use slides. If you have a working prototype, a video or live demonstration, you can show it during your talk but this should not add time to your presentation beyond the 5 minutes

  • You can only submit one idea per team/individual.

  • Interest for the European Innovation Academy Scholarships Summer School must be indicated at the application stage. Interest at a later stage cannot be accommodated.

  • Applications for the final 10 of Student Innovators 2018 will be selected based on the Criteria mentioned as below and announced on C4E and Department of Business and Public Administration websites and social media platforms.

  • Applicants are required to complete the application form below with information about their team and a brief description of their project (questions 1 and 2 on application). Student Innovators 2018 reserves the right to use the title and brief description of the project in the application form publicly. However, other details submitted on the proposal will be kept confidential. If you are concerned about protecting your idea, do not put any protected information in your short description.

  • By applying you agree to abide by the University’s Rules, Regulations and Academic code of conduct regarding academic integrity and plagiarism.

  • In order to prepare your application, please read the questions below and fill in your entry form. All questions are mandatory to answer.

*Please note that It does not mean that mature ideas or projects have any advantage over an initial idea.


Criteria for Student Innovators 2018 Competition:
  • Clarity and consistency; Problem Statement and Proposed solution

  • Creativity and innovation

  • Motivation

  • Feasibility of the idea

  • Teamwork

  • Impact / Value creation for clients

  • Definition the market: Understanding the market potential of their idea, Commercial potential

  • Communication Skills / Science Communication

  • Presentation

  • Basic Management Skills


Criteria for the EIA Scholarships:
  • Who will get the most out of the participation in the European Innovation Academy?

  • Demonstration of passion for entrepreneurship

  • Willingness to learn and acquire new skills

  • Flexibility and adaptability

  • Teamwork
